    • I’m reading a book in french given to me by one of my students, but it’s by an Austrian author Stefan Zweig and another ‘Le Montespan’ by Jean Teule. Have plenty of french authors on the TBR shelf, Jean Giono ‘Second Harvest’ (have read 2 already ‘The Man Who Planted Trees’ is excellent and ‘The Horseman on the Roof’ ), Flaubert (read ‘Madame Bovary’ and have ‘Salammbo’ to read alongside the correspondence of Flaubert & George Sand – their letters started after she gave a great review of this work, have read a lot of this already and seen a great film about her), I have read Amelie Nothomb (Belgian writer) ‘Fear & Trembling’, contemporary and very funny, about her year in Japan and another of hers in french. But the next on my list is Emmanuel Carrère which I am really looking forward to. Thanks for asking. And you?

  1. Oh, I love the books you’ve been reading this year- I think our tastes may be very similar.
My sister just gave me Caleb’s Crossing and Deadman’s Dance and Tigers Wife have been on my to read list for a while…just need to find the time!

    • Hard to recommend without knowing what you like, but so far this year, ‘The Snow Child’ is a real stand out book for me and I am also really enjoying Susan Hill’s novellas for their lyrical prose.

  2. True, I like realistic fiction the best, for example one year I read some of Maeve Binchy books because I could relate to her characters and it was fun to see the same characters and settings in other books. Thank you! And I need more time to read!

  3. i have not read a book this year. Ha! it used to be one of my greatest pleasures: sitting at an outdoor table of a cafe, drinking a beer, reading. Now I just write. Kind of sad. I would never have started writing if i didn’t read a bunch, and now, i can’t read if i want to write a bunch. last one was The Dice Man. Worth a go if you haven’t read it.

  4. I look at this list and went “oh, ah, yes I read this, I want to read this too!” kind of expression. Here’s my reaction:

Interpreter of Maladies, Jhumpa Lahiri – Love it, love it, love it!
Sister, Rosamund Lupton – I think this is great!
State of Wonder, Ann Patchett – I am reading it now…
Shantaram, Gregory David Roberts – read this in 2009, love it!
A Week in December, Sebastian Faulks – oooh, I got this on my shelf.
All Our Worldly Goods, Irène Némirovsky – not this book but planning to read Suite Francaise
Caleb’s Crossing, Geraldine Brooks – oooh, I got this on my shelf.
The Tiger’s Wife, Téa Obreht – read it, didn’t like it.
Ragnörak, A.S. Byatt – ah, I wanted to read this.
Cutting for Stone, Abraham Verghese – oooh, I got this on my shelf.

We got a lot in common! This is just for this year’s list, can you imagine what the rest of the year is going to be like? 🙂

    • I love that feeling, arriving on a blog where I relate so much to the list, it’s a great year for reading and I am really enjoying the recommendations and seeing what like minded bloggers and followers are reading too – more obsessed than ever and pleased to have discovered your reviews 🙂

  5. I am so impressed by your exhaustive list and…. a bit jealous! wish I had the time to read as frequently 🙂
Great french books: “Rien ne s’oppose a la nuit” from Delphine de Vigan and “24 heures de la vie d’une femme” from Stephan Zweig. very different but both well-written.
    Thanks for sharing your reads.

    • Looking at someone else’s list always makes me think that exact same thought, because no two lists are ever the same. One book a week is my challenge and its not an easy one for me since I rarely read during the day, but a little every day for sure.

Thank you for the recommendations, I will look out for them.

  7. Claire,

I’m currently reading The Power And The Glory by Graham Greene. I’ve been wanting to read this novel for years and have finally started. Have you ever read Graham Greene?

  8. Oooh, looking at these lists of books is making my mouth water! So many good options here. Thank you for inspiring me to fit in more reading in my life. And thanks for visiting my site, by the way. Cheers, Anjali (PS: Les idées de livres en français sont aussi les bienvenues!)

    • I am looking forward to your book too Anjali, I love the cover and the blurb sounds wonderful.

Souvent je demande mes amies et mes etudiants qu’est ce qu’ils lisent en francais, il y a tellement une grande variété d’autre pays et cultures. C’est ca que j’aime.

  9. I’m so glad to have found someone else that puts the countries in front of the author’s names!

I’m trying to read more geographically diverse books and this helps a lot. Thanks!
